18. Boat Captain Returns

The ship captain had become a bit of a running gag through the series with Kratos going out of his way to kill him, more than once.

The first game during the Hydra boss battle, the Boat Captain is eaten by the Hydra and when Kratos ventures into the creature’s mouth, he finds the captain hanging from the back of the monster’s throat. Rather than helping him, Kratos kicks him into the belly of the beast. He is then found again in the Underworld but Kratos stabs him again to give himself leverage in order to climb.

In God of War 2, Kratos fights the Barbarian King who summons undead souls to fight alongside him, one of which is the Boat Captain, which does not fight, but cowers in the corner. That doesn’t stop Kratos from killing him though.

In God of War 3, in the underworld, Kratos then finds a note from the Boat Captain that reads “He could have saved me. He held my life in his hand, and still he let go. I may have been just a mere boat captain, but he treated me as if I was nothing! He is to blame for my torment here! I hope he suffers in hades as I have. Damn that Ghost of Sparta!"

The gag is continued through the most recent instalment, with players finding a treasure map that references the Boat Captain’s ruined ship.
