Sony’s plan for the next God of War was always a soft reboot, marking a fresh start for the series and its battle-scarred protagonist.

Switching the action from Greece to ancient Egypt was considered early on, with half of the development team in favour of planting Kratos in a world of pyramids, pharaohs and sandstorms.

According to Cory Barlog, the Norse setting was selected because ancient Egypt would have involved more civilisation, which would have distracted from the central theme of a stranger in a strange land.

God of War creator David Jaffe’s roadmap for the series is said to have always included the possibility of bringing other mythological pantheons into the equation so, although the Egyptian deities are safe from Kratos’s wrath for now, they may find themselves on his hit list in the future.
