God of War: Ascension - 5 Reasons It's Awesome, 5 Reasons It Sucks

1. It Struggles To Live Up To The Previous Games

Though it delivers plenty of what made the series so popular in the first place, it does end up falling slightly short of the series' true brilliance. The boss battles on the whole are not as refined or intelligently thought out as in the previous games, perhaps in a conscious effort to not make the later events in the timeline scene tame compared to what we see here. Take the above fight between Kratos and Cronos in God of War 3; regarded by most as the best boss fight in the entire series - and rightly so - there's nothing that even comes close to it in Ascension. In this entry, it seems like more generic fights against hordes of enemies - as in the dreaded Trial of Archimedes - win out against large-scale fights, which is a shame. I can't argue against the majesty of the final battle, but it's a shame that none of the big battles before it really live up to the God of War name. What do you make of Kratos' latest journey?
