God Of War Ragnarok Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs (No Spoilers)

2. The MCU Influence

I, for one, was not expecting Atreus to repeatedly say "I got this!" or "Totally!", Thor to call Kratos a "Dumba**!" or for newcomer Angrboda's first scene to feel like every single character introduction we've had since the MCU established itself.

Whilst not giving away spoilers as to characters or scenes, there are large portions of Ragnarok that feel directly taken from specific Marvel blockbusters circa 2016 onwards, seeing quirky characters replete with animal sidekicks jar with God of War's tone and identity.

Nothing entirely "breaks", and maybe this just IS the only way to "reach a wider audience" in 2022, but the likes of Atreus and Angrboda often feel entirely like teenagers from our world in 2022, rather than believable individuals inhabiting their own space and reality.

Thankfully there is a line in the game that explains Atreus' more "modern" or "different" way of speaking and acting, but when the majority of characters - from Kratos to Freya, Tyr to Thor - are written to have dialogue that bolsters a God of War game, it stands out.
