Hearthstone: Blackrock Mountain - 5 Most Powerful Cards You Must Own
4. Grim Patron (Neutral)
Card Text: 3/3, 5 mana. Whenever this minion survives damage, summon another Grim Patron. Grim Patron is an odd card, because it really shouldnt work as well as it does. A 5 cost minion having stats of 3/3 is an awful investment, and the fact that it can spawn multiple copies of itself if it survives damage is not particularly useful given its low health. Or at least, it isnt particularly useful to most classes. One class has made the Grim Patron its Patron saint, pun entirely intended, and that is the Warrior. Warrior decks are already packed with minions that activate their effects when they are dealt damage Acolyte of Pain and Grommash spring immediately to mind as well as cards that activate those effects without killing the minion, like Whirlwind and Deaths Bite. Grim Patron would therefore be a natural fit into the Warrior class, even without some of the supporting cards that Warrior has. However, where the Patron really shines is in the combination of minion effects available to the Warrior. The Patron Warrior deck relies on the interaction between Grim Patron, its ability to fill up the board with copies of itself, and Warsong Commander. Crucially, Warsong Commander gives any minion with 3 attack or less the Charge ability when it comes into play. That includes each and every copy of Grim Patron that is spawned in. Using this combo, suddenly it becomes possible to set up a turn in which you summon a Warsong Commander and a Grim Patron, activate the Patron to produce several copies of itself, and hit your opponent for 10+ damage. Best case scenario you win. Worst case scenario your opponent is suddenly facing a board full of angry dwarves. As a final testament to its power, Grim Patron has a deck built specifically around it. There arent many cards around with that claim to fame.
