When you're boosting up the passing game, it's easy to be concerned that Madden would be broken, every game would finish 67-74, and defenders may as well go and sit down on their benches. Wrong. While there aren't sop many specific changes to the defence, EA have certainly made them tougher to overcome. Players stick with their man, and feel like muscle-laden presences rather than flimsy formalities that you can easily walk past. Also on previous editions, the running game has been too easy. It sucks the fun out of the game knowing you want to pass the ball and that it's the right option, but it'd be easy enough to run the ball that far. Now that isn't the case. Run stoppers can make big plays and pass defenders are given a decent chance if their positioning is correct.
