Despite the implication being that Marvel's Avengers is being set up as a live-service multiplayer game, according to the developers, every single mission will be able to be played in single-player. Perhaps in their attempt to create a cinematic story as well as a game that can continue to provide content for years to come, the main questline can only be played solo, either online or offline.

Thankfully, this should mean that the story itself won't be sacrificed in favour of crow-barred in online components, but will make sure the gameplay itself is optimised for solo play, and not punish you for having no friends to join your session.

As someone who slogged through The Division 2's most difficult moments because the devs lied and said that you could totally play it solo, this is a very welcome clarification.
