After Spawn was added as a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 11, it didn't take long before players noticed many in-jokes and references. When he meets Joker, Spawn emphasises how much he hates clowns. One of Spawn's rivals, Violator, often takes the form of a clown.

When Raiden confronts him, the thunder god calls him "another dark knight". Spawn retorts with, "the billionaire crusader? He's a friend." This is a nod to their team-up in the comic, Batman/Spawn.

When he sees Jacqui Briggs, Spawn points out how she looks like someone he once loved. He is talking about his wife, Wanda Blake, before he was transmogrified into a Hellspawn.

When he fights Jai, Spawn points out that "there's a snake in the operation". This is a reference to how Jax has betrayed his family and friends. It's also a wink to the comics because Spawn was murdered by a corrupt government agent.

When he meets Scorpion, the pair reference previous crossover games they starred in. Scorpion says he's been to a dimension filled with injustice as a reference to his appearance in Injustice 2. Spawn exclaims that "his soul still burns" as a reference to him appearing in Soul Calibur II.
