Shinnok is considered one of the most evil beings in the Mortal Kombat mythos; he is a fallen Elder God who wanted control of Earthrealm and declared war on his peers when denied it in favor of Raiden. Banished to the Netherrealm and constantly tortured by it's ruler; he would meet Quan Chi here and together they would take over the Realm and install Shinnok as it's new ruler. From there he built a massive army and weakened the fabric of the Realms by aiding Shang Tsung to resurrect Sindel in Earthrealm; an act that allowed Shao Kahn to exploit a loophole and invade. In the aftermath of this Shinnok and his army invaded the Realm of Edenia and attacked the heavens; only to be defeated by Liu Kang and re-banished to the Netherrealm ,by Raiden, where he manipulated future events from. Shao Kahn is dead or imprisoned by the Elder Gods; the series needs a new big bad and who better than Shinnok to fill that void? After that tease; Netherrealm have to include him. To do anything else would undermine their new continuity; or at the very least frustrate fans. Maybe he'll be one of the reveals during the live stream this Thursday.
