Nintendo Switch: 9 Major Developments You Need To Know

7. Zero Physical Backwards Compatibility

Nintendo have always prioritised legacy as a selling point. Since the days of the Game Boy Colour supporting Game Boy cartridges, all the way through to the Wii supporting Gamecube games and the Wii U being compatible with Wii titles, especially this generation, Nintendo's approach was a breath of fresh air in comparison to the PS4 and - until recently - the Xbox One.

Until now.

This has almost definitely been done because having a portable device with a full-size disc drive would've been cumbersome as hell, but IGN sought out Nintendo for clarification on "whether or not Switch can play physical Wii U or 3DS games".

Brilliantly - and this is such a Nintendo answer - "a representative responded with a simple 'no'".

Hopefully there'll be some sort of 'upgrade program' for discs you've already bought, as the detachable controllers on the Switch aren't (as yet) motion-enabled, meaning there's either a workaround coming for your Wii/Wii U collection, or you'll have to re-buy 'Switch versions' of them going forward.
