Ranking Every Game Of The Year Winner Since 2010

7. God Of War (2018)

God Of War
Sony

In some ways, God Of War is in a tough position here. There’s the recency bias working in its favour, but there’s also the fact that other titles have had longer to carve out that nostalgia tinted legacy and pack their game with DLC add ons for an even better experience.

2018 is definitely one of those years that will be looked back on as one of this generation’s greatest. Possibly the greatest. And while God Of War played a huge part of that, fellow game changers Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption 2 were massive too.

God Of War deserves its crown, although RDR2 in particular has as many fans. It managed to inject a fresh story into an aging franchise, yet still stuck to its guns with the faithful formula. One of the most visceral games in years, it managed to be thoughtful and poignant too.

Like Overwatch, it is absolutely superb at what it does. But there’s just more to do in a lot of the other winners, even if it’s not as inch perfect as Kratos’ story. That said, it beat RDR2 despite similar comparisons, so it’s definitely doing something right.
