13. Grunt

Mass Effect Garrus
Bioware

Grunt’s loyalty mission plays out like an old school boss battle; even his motivation is just wanting to kill the biggest thing he can find. And while his wider narrative is compelling, the simplicity of his personality is his undoing when compared to the deepest characters.

He’s the type of character many players would say is the most enjoyable, but he’s just missing... something. The Krogan don’t accept him because he’s tankbred; you can’t make a warrior in the lab, after all. So he completes what is essentially a Krogan bar mitzvah, only with less chair dancing and more bloodythirsty giant worms.

Once Shep helps him kill the thresher maw, he is accepted as part of the tribe and even leads his own unit in ME3. It’s refreshing to see that the Krogan judge him entirely by his achievements and not by his birth, but he loses his narrative uniqueness once that happens.

Still, his drunken escapades and emails in the Citadel DLC are not to be missed. It’s a great add-on all around, but Grunt feels like the character they wring the most life out of.
