Ranking EVERY Nintendo Console From Worst To Best
8. Gamecube
N64 may have been Nintendo’s first big step into the 3D-era but the Gamecube was where they built upon this. After criticism from developers the previous generation, Nintendo discarded cartridges the miniDVD format for the Gamecube. It received wide praise for its new controller, and boasted a stellar library, but failed to find a foothold in a market dominated by the PS2. Ultimately, it made 21 million sales.
There are numerous reasons for this, limited online support being one of them alongside lack of multimedia features when compared to competitors. Like many Nintendo consoles, it also struggled to retain third-party support, losing initial exclusives like Resident Evil 4. Gamecube releases often sold significantly worse than their Xbox/PS2 versions.
It holds an enduring legacy with Nintendo fans, providing some of the 6th generation's best games in the form of Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros Melee, F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime and more. There’s little reason to invest in a Gamecube console now when the Wii is fully backwards compatible but the extensive software library is definitely worth revisiting.
