Ranking EVERY Nintendo Console From Worst To Best
6. DS
Nintendo didn’t initially plan the DS to succeed the Game Boy line. Originally marketed as a “Third Pillar” between the Advance and Gamecube, it was backwards compatible with the Advance, expanded on the SP’s foldable design and introduced two screens, utilising one of them as a touchscreen. It reconfirmed Nintendo’s dominance in the handheld market against the Playstation Portable, becoming Nintendo’s best-selling console of all time at 154 million sales.
Launching in 2004, the DS successfully tapped into the casual market with titles such as Brain Training, Nintendogs and Animal Crossing selling millions. Not one to leave its core franchises behind, it was also home to three generations of Pokemon releases, multiple Mario sub-series, Metroid and more, boasting an impressive library.
It was also their first handheld with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing online multiplayer and wireless local play within a short distance. It provided unique ways to play through the touchscreen, setting the basis for the Nintendo Wii’s launch in 2006 and still holds up to this day.
