Ranking EVERY Nintendo Console From Worst To Best
5. Wii
Nintendo left the Gamecube era knowing it wasn’t enough to simply match the competition's hardware power alone, with Gamecube only reaching 21 million sales when compared to the PS2’s 155 million. The lateral thinking approach continued to guide Nintendo with the Wii, focusing on gameplay over graphics. Introducing motion controls to mainstream gaming, Wii launched in 2006 to critical acclaim.
Boosted by pack-in title Wii Sports that demonstrated the console’s abilities, the success of this and Wii Play saw the “Wii Series” launch that aimed at the casual market, ranging from Chess and Music to fitness sensation Wii Fit with its balance board. It broke the mold in many ways and the fact that it still sees new releases today via Ubisoft’s Just Dance series confirm the strong impact Wii left on casual gaming.
Whilst Nintendo continued to focus on core franchises, this new casual focus turned away some hardcore gamers, not helped by the power difference between its HD competitors, the Xbox 360 and PS3. It wouldn’t be until Wii U that Nintendo moved to HD but this didn't stop Wii becoming Nintendo’s most successful home console, reaching 100 million unit sales.
