1994 - Super Metroid

Hilariously the last "home console 2D Metroid" before 2021's Metroid Dread, Super remains a supremely confident action platformer that crystallised its own genre name: The "Metroidvania".

Obviously the second half of that came from Castlevania, but Samus' adventure here was such a step up from her two previous outings.

Awesome weapons, a game-long upgrade path and an H.R. Geiger-inspired set of levels replete with remnants of a bygone civilisation, drinking in every inch of Super Metroid is still essential.
