Coming from a supposed 'Rockstar insider' back in 2015, this rumor came up back in the days where RDR2 had yet to be confirmed.

During an anonymous Reddit post, this insider stated that the game would be called Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West (close enough), that it would take place twelve years prior to Redemption, and that you'd be playing as one of three characters: Seth, Irish, and a completely-customizable third character.

The Reddit post also went into detail on the potential backstories of both Irish and Seth. Irish (naturally) grew up in Ireland, and he moves to the game's setting when he turns twenty-one. Seth works as a bank teller with a wife and kids, but upon hearing about a grand treasure, he uses up all of his life savings to find it. The story would then show him steadily lose his state of mind and his connection with his loved ones as he continually fails to find the treasure and eventually becomes the grave-digging creep that he is in Redemption.

Although the concept of multiple playable characters with an option for a customizable character seems possible, it's difficult to see Seth and Irish being the selected characters for RDR2 to focus on. Both of them were entertaining personalities to be around, but it's hard to see the main story focus on them. A cameo appearance from both would be great, but a full game wouldn't be necessary.
