Resident Evil 7 Chris Redfield
Capcom

For the most part, Resident Evil 7 could have taken place in an entirely different universe to the other games in the franchise.

With the exception of a couple of easter eggs found towards the climax and the return of one familiar face just before the credits, Capcom decided to distance itself from the increasingly convoluted (and increasingly silly) series canon.

There's no reason why Capcom can't tie this new version of the Resident Evil universe into the old one in a way that would satisfy longtime fans. Acknowledging previous plots and characters doesn't mean that the game would have to play like them, and there's still ways to continue the story of the franchise under the new framework.

Simply don't throw out everything that came before, and the ability to see familiar characters in an entirely new context would be great. While it probably wouldn't make sense to make rock-punching Chris Redfield the star of the next game, giving the spotlight to some lesser known characters would still stay true to the grounded horror established in the latest release.
