Rockstar Games has officially announced that "active development" on GTA 6 is underway.

Gamers everywhere lost their minds when the team behind one of the industry's biggest franchises leaked this news onto their official Twitter account. It is exciting, and it's something millions of people have been waiting years for.

Emphasis on "years" - GTA 5, the last proper entry into the series, launched way back in 2013. Now, nearly a full decade on, Rockstar are happy to confirm that they're busily working to make 6 a worthy follow up that'll "step into" Grand Theft Auto's future.

The team went on to thank fans for both their support and patience. Rockstar also said that their "goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered". They're aiming big for GTA 6 then, although some who played the recent "Definitive Editions" of 3, Vice City and San Andreas (especially on day one pre-patching) might get a laugh out of that statement.

Expect to see countless wishlists start to pop up all over social media soon. Rockstar were very careful not to discuss potential release dates though.

They'll make fans wait for news on that.
