SNES Classic Mini: 20 Video Games It Must Have

10. Final Fantasy VI

Arguably the culmination of everything Squaresoft had been working on since the original NES Final Fantasy, VI (or III as most US-based gamers knew it) was epic in size, scope and soundtrack.

The graphics were a push beyond the earlier Final Fantasy II (or, IV in proper numerals) and the battle systems and world were more sophisticated than ever.

In simplest terms, players were first cast as Terra, working (under duress) for an empire in search of espers: magical beings in a world filled with steampunk technology. But her mind-control is removed and she teams up with hero Locke and rebel group the Returners to battle the empire and right the wrongs of the world.

The plot expands to some fourteen characters alongside assorted villains including one Kefka, a fan-favourite contender that can give Sephiroth a run for his money. This is a grand game fondly remembered by many 16-bit gamers, and one that deserves some renewed attention in the modern era.

Bryan Langley’s first console was the Super Nintendo and he hasn’t stopped using his opposable thumbs since. He is based in Bristol, UK and is still searchin' for them glory days he never had.
