Star Wars Battlefront 2 FINISHED, EA Moves DICE To Battlefield 6
So long, and may the Force be with you.
After two years, a rocky launch and 26 free updates later, DICE and EA have finally concluded Star Wars: Battlefront 2's epic gaming comeback.
In a community transmission released yesterday, Battlefront 2 community manager Dennis Bränvall revealed that today's Battle of Scarif update would be the game's last. This follows the departure of community manager Ben Walke, who is now working with DICE on another project widely expected to be Battlefield 6.
News of the Scarif update being Battlefront's last has come as something of a surprise to the game's community, but it's important to put things into perspective. By reacting to community feedback and integrating vital fixes and changes, DICE transformed Battlefront 2 from one of the generation's most controversial releases into a genuinely great Star Wars game. Two-and-a-half years isn't bad going at all.
The update itself brings all sorts of exciting changes to the title, including long-requested skins for Darth Maul, Emperor Palpatine and Rey. It's a hefty content drop, even if the longing for further updates will inevitably stick around for some time to come. Many had expected DICE to return to the Clone Wars upon the conclusion of the animated series' seventh season, which is set to end within the next few weeks.
It does feel somewhat out of the blue, and while DICE and EA have echoed each other by saying their "vision" for Battlefront 2 has now been completed, news of Battlefield V also receiving its final update has led to speculation that EA have shifted the entire studio to development on Battlefield 6, which is set to release sometime late in 2021 and be developed for the next generation of consoles.
In a statement issued to IGN, EA confirmed that "longer term, [DICE] is focused on the future of Battlefield that we’ll be bringing to players in 2021."
As for Battlefront 3, the future is less clear. EA's Star Wars deal is said to conclude in 2023, and Respawn's Jedi: Fallen Order is the only Star Wars game confirmed to be in development.
