Super Smash Bros: 10 Game Franchises We NEED To See
6. Spyro The Dragon
The Spyro series mimics Crash Bandicoot to a tee in a sizable number of ways. Following the release of an acclaimed platforming trilogy on the Playstation, popularity waned and quality dipped after the original developers (Insomniac rather than Naughty Dog in this instance, who subsequently moved onto the acclaimed Ratchet & Clank series) departed and subsequent titles went multiplatform with diminishing returns.
Spyro’s revival actually predated Crash’s, however, coming on the back of his headlining of the Skylanders franchise, which pioneered the ‘toys-to-life’ concept and generated huge sales for Activision through the sales of both games and figurines.
Though he hasn’t starred in an original platforming title since 2008, Spyro’s Reignited Trilogy, a remaster of the original Playstation titles akin to Crash’s N-Sane Trilogy, has made him a viable property once again. He and two other characters appeared in Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled last year, marking the first crossover of the characters since 2007 and given that Activision own the rights to both, they can easily come as a package deal.
Throwing Spyro into the Super Smash Bros mix alongside his marsupial cousin therefore seems logical, enabling even more voluminous battles between platforming icons of past and present. He certainly fits the mould, with his inherent abilities to glide and breathe fire at long range giving him the potential to be a very annoying opponent to face.
