Few games have ever experienced such widespread success as Minecraft. Since its original release in 2011 it has become the top selling game of all time, with its worldwide sales of 180 million units dwarfing the second-placed Grand Theft Auto V. Available on seemingly every console, handheld and smartphone OS going, it has become ubiquitous across the world, with even non-gamers familiar with its concept.

Its very hard to define what Minecraft actually is. Its core mechanic is the exploration and construction of an infinitely expanding world, but the user creativity and the availability of mods has resulted in a game where pretty much anything in the realms of imagination is possible (not unlike Lego), from fighting hordes to surviving against the elements.

Though developers Mojang were bought by Microsoft in 2014, Minecraft has remained multiplatform, with the main game and spin-offs such as Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode and the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons all available across the board. As a result, there presumably wouldn’t be any major obstacles preventing cross-promotion of the world’s biggest game in Nintendo’s brawler.

In terms of characters, the default player skins of Alex and/or Steve (or even the iconic Creeper creature) would seem like the most logical inclusions. Giving them the ability to reshape elements of maps or repurpose blocks into items would be an interesting mechanic to explore.
