10 Coolest Canine Companions In Gaming

4. Hewie

Hewie Trapped in a creepy castle and stalked by sadistic horrors, Fiona's only hope at escaping Belli Castle is a single German Shepard: Hewie. What's really interesting about Haunting Ground's doggy deuteragonist is how he can be trained by the player. Whereas Dogmeat in Fallout 3 can be scolded or praised with no effect, doing so in this game will train your dog, allowing you to teach him what not to do, and what he should do to greater effect. Furthermore, you can pet this dog, and even get him to shake hands with you. This might seem like a pointless flavour option, but it's sadly missing in most games featuring a dog. Though unconfirmed if they are the same dog, Hewie bears a strong resemblance to "That dog" from Resident Evil 4, released early the same year as Haunting Ground. If these dogs are indeed one in the same, that means at some point, Hewie travelled from Italty to Spain, or vice versa, in order to come to the aid of the protagonists of both games. Not bad, for a German Shepard.

Ken was born in 1994, and before the turn of the century, he was already a gamer for life, starting with Pokémon Blue Version. He has a passion for storytelling, especially in the gaming medium. Growing up on a healthy diet of JRPGs and point and click adventure games, young Kenny grew up playing Nintendo and Sony consoles, before becoming a snobby member of the PC Master Race. Nowadays, he resides in a time warp, refusing to believe the nineties ended as he fills up his Steam library with old point and clicks and cRPGs.
