The Game Awards 2018: 7 Ups & 6 Downs

Ups...

The show opened with a very neat moment indeed, as PlayStation’s Shawn Layden, Xbox’s Phil Spencer and Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime appeared on-stage together to talk-up the wonder of the gaming industry.

While it seemed for a moment like Layden might announce a walking-back of Sony's controversial, anti-consumer crossplay policies, that sadly wasn't the case.

Still, it was a nice reminder that, ultimately, the notion of the "Console Wars" is a construct that exists more among players than it does the businessmen running the show.

Hopefully this isn't the last time we see them sharing the stage together, and fingers crossed next time it might be in the service of something a little more meaningful.
