The Game Awards 2018: 7 Ups & 6 Downs

6. Dead Cells Beats Black Ops 4, Far Cry 5 & Destiny 2 (Best Action Game)

One of the most unexpected upsets and pleasant surprises came fairly early on in the show, as Dead Cells picked up the Best Action Game award, beating out its far higher-profile competition in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Destiny 2: Forsaken, Far Cry 5 and Mega Man 11.

Given that Dead Cells is a card-carrying indie without the benefit of an existing brand identity and a budget just a fraction of its competition, it's especially impressive.

Clearly the Game Awards' voters wanted to make a statement by giving one of the year's most creative titles the rub over its blockbuster rivals.

Given that the majority of the night's awards were handed out to fairly predictable, down-the-line AAA offerings, this was a most welcome spoiler indeed.
