The Game Awards 2018 Nominations: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

The big surprise Game of the Year nominee this year was without question hit indie platformer Celeste. While it's currently the second-best-reviewed game of 2018 - sitting just behind Red Dead Redemption 2 and tied with God of War - it's not typically the sort of title that lands in the GOTY conversation.

It would've been so easy for Celeste to be snubbed and leave its legion of dedicated fans fuming, but despite its niche appeal, the game's thoughtful premise and ludicrously, infuriatingly addictive gameplay resonated with even more casual jurors.

It hasn't got a hope in hell of winning, of course, but this is most certainly a case where the nomination itself is basically the win.
