THQ Shutting Down Multiple Studios
In an effort to move away from kids games and movie tie-in games THQ has announced they will be effectively closing the doors on three different studios.
THQ has announced they will be effectively closing the doors on three different studios. Blue Tongue Entertainment in Melbourne, THQ Studio Australia in Brisbane, Rainbow Studios or THQ Digital Studios Phoenix were all essentially closed; there were approximately 200 jobs lost in all. Rainbow Studios was best known for Motocross Madness but also produced MX vs. ATV; THQ also stated they will be discontinuing the MX vs. ATV series as well.
"With this realignment, we are narrowing our focus to high-quality owned IP with broad appeal that can be leveraged across multiple platforms, and to work with the best talent in the industry, By right-sizing our internal development capacities for our console portfolio, our five internal studios are focused on delivering high-quality games with talented teams driving the execution of those titles to market. As we have outlined in our business strategies, we are making shifts to reduce movie-based and licensed kids' video games in our portfolio, which underscores our strategy to move away from games that will not generate strong profits in the future."What this all comes down to is THQ wants to minimize there monetary losses and is doing so by moving away from kid games and movie tie in games that are basically doomed to make little to no money. This is smart business decision it is just unfortunate that so many people had to lose their jobs, I hope they are all able to find work. However, I do hope that THQ now is not spread so thin and can improve their new IP's. Do any of you see THQ competing on the same level as EA or Activision in the future?
