Top 10 Free iPhone Apps [23rd - 29th June]
Welcome back to your weekly round up of the top 10 free iPhones apps.
Welcome back to your weekly round up of the top 10 free iPhones apps. Have you missed us this week? We've missed you too but we've been keeping ourselves busy playing all the great apps that have made their way into the chart. Are you itching to know what's at the top? Or maybe find out what's just not worth your time and data allowance downloading? Here's what we think. 10. Crystal Maze (New Entry) If you have come here looking for The Crystal Maze which has the barmy and bald Richard O'Brien for the host then you are very much mistaken. This is less to do with the crystals and more to do with a little table full of maze. You start off with lots of wooden blocks and you have to guide the crystal ball through to get to the hole to win. To do this you are required to rearrange the blocks to create a direct route there. Starts simple enough but gets harder quick. If you like a challenge that will help you while away the time when you should be working/ studying / pooing/ listening to your partner, then you should download this. 9. Bubble Mania (New Entry) A poor man's Bubble Shooter. Except it isn't actually as bad as we were expecting, in fact, it's probably a whole lot better. The majority of the time when a game turns up in the 'free' section that is based on a popular paid game, it is usually quite tripe. And if not tripe then massively inferior. But this game has done it well. You have to shoot the little coloured bubbles into a group of matching coloured ones. In doing this you will be rescuing the baby critters, and what better way to feel good about yourself than to rescue a ton of baby critters?! You have over 60 levels to work your through and we're sure you'll be bubble busting your way through to the very end. 8. Angry Birds Space Free (Down 1) This is the free version of the massively popular game Angry Birds in Space basically an attempt to entice you in and unlock the full game. In this version you are treated to the first episode of the game which has 10 gravity defying level to it, and you have the obligatory green pigs which you need to defeat in order to defend the egg shaped asteroid. To do this you enlist the help of the formidable Angry Birds, including new character additions. Starting off in a sling shot these fearless red fowl are itching to be fired off into space to obliterate the defences of the green piggies and the fact that they are in space has some unusual effects on their flight path. Each of the asteroids that you fly past has its own gravitational pull so youre required to put a little bit of extra effort and thought into the game than in previous versions. Of course, when you reach the end of the free levels you are left itching for more, and for 69p to unlock the full version its a steal. You will spend hours aplenty teaching those pesky pigs a lesson! 7. CSR Racing (New Entry) Have you ever played Midnight Club or Need For Speed? If you have, and you liked them, then you'd probably better give this game a blast. You are the new kid on the block, and you need to prove yourself worthy of racing the top guys. You'll start of with a secret sponsor that, after seeing you learn the basics, thinks you have potential and bungs you $25,000 to treat yourself to a new car to race with. How kind of them ey? The only controls you have to master are shifting up and down so it's not quite as involving as the popular games I've already mentioned, but it is free so how can we complain? Working through the game you will need to upgrade your ride to drive with the best of them and you'll have lots of fun doing it. Our recommendation? Download, download, download!! 6. Madcoaster (New Entry) Fun little game if you like riding on roller coasters, collecting coins and trying to hit birds along the way. And let's face it, who doesn't? You take the ride of your life on a rickety wooden track trying to earn as many coins as you can. The coins you earn can be used to upgrade your cart, buy boosts or unlock the shy rider who lives in a dinosaur costume. There's plenty of things you can buy and to make this different from a run of the mill endurance game, you have the added extra of birds, blowfish and animals on the track to knock out of the sky. It's not the greatest game in the world but it is quite addictive. Something that is enjoyable, easy going and worth at least 5 minutes of your time. 5. Toy Defense (New Entry) Wowsers. This is a fantastic strategy/tower defence game. It had us hooked from the second the first toy shoulder shot his first plastic bullet out of his rifle. You make your way through the levels protecting your base by placing soldiers in the best spots to shoot the invaders and send them to toy soldier heaven as they try and move down the path and take you down. Pick up your guns (which are upgradeable by the way) and join the fight. Victory is their only option, and these guys need YOU! Download it now and see for yourself. But do it now. The Nazi's are coming. 4. Escape Bear (New Entry) With the popularity that Temple Run has gained it was only a matter of time before someone developed a free and not quite as good version of it: and that's exactly what Escape Bear is. Basically you play as a bear that is running through the jail, avoiding the traps of reaching arms and spikes, all while trying to escape 'Jailer B'. The controls are halted and far from smooth and don't make for a very enjoyable gaming experience. Even if it is free, that doesn't mean we should expect a sub par game, especially when for just 69p you can purchase the game it was based on, that is well worth money and won't make you wish for the minutes back that you wasted trying his one out. 3. Flow Free (New Entry) There's not really much we can say about this game, it's a case of trying to join the same coloured dots without crossing the lines. Play your way through 150 levels with increasing difficulty. None of which are extremely challenging, but are good for quick entertainment value or time passing should you find yourself in need of something to do that you don't need to put a lot of work into. Once the levels are completed you have the option to buy more through an in-app purchase. Not brilliant but too shabby neither. Worth a quick try to see if it's for you. 2. Stick Tennis (New Entry) With the massive Wimbledon tennis tournament being played this week it isn't a huge surprise that tennis game is in the chart. What is a surprise, however, is just how much fun this one is. We thought the reason this was up here was because of a knee jerk reaction that a lot of people have when a big sporting event is on TV, you know the one, where everyone downloads everything to do with the sport and pretends they are a huge fan. But believe it or not we think this one could have gotten here on it's own merit. In fact, just believe it. This fast paced game had us gripped from the start, we worked our way through opponent after opponent bettering our skills by swiping the screen and sending the ball flying in the right direction. You need quick reactions to master this game but once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down. You have the option of unlocking more Tennis royalty to play against for World Domination or individual Grand Slams with an in-app purchase, which we think is great. Now, where's our strawberries and cream? 1. Song Pop (Non-Mover) And now to the number one free app currently sweeping the nation. In Song Pop the object is to guess what the name of a song or artist is from a snippet of the song played. Not only that, you have to beat another player to it, and believe me when I say that the pressure makes guessing even a song you know well very difficult when youre on the spot. A nice feature of this is that you get the choice of 3 different categories so if you have absolutely no idea about 80s pop music, then you dont have to go through answering questions on it. This game is no doubt going to stay near the top of the chart for a while, and so it should: it is a fantastic game and deserves its number one spot. And so concludes another chart. Let us know what you thought of the games and join us again next week to see what's still up there and what's fallen off the face of the App Store universe. *Chart was correct at 11am Friday 29th June
