8 Mods Better Than The Actual Game

7. Project M

Project M is a 2011 mod for Super Smash Bros. Brawl whose primary goal was to "fix" the most complained-about aspects of its central gameplay loop, in turn bringing it in line with the two previous Smash games.

Many Smash fans felt that Nintendo made Brawl too accessible for casual players, slowing gameplay down and introducing luck-based elements like the widely maligned tripping mechanic, where players had a small chance of tripping during combat.

Project M consequently sped gameplay up, eliminated tripping entirely, re-balanced the roster, included more fluid movement options, and generally rewarded players for their skill above all else.

For players with even the slightest interest in the competitive experience, it rendered Brawl basically obsolete overnight, enough that after spending countless hours with Project M, it's legitimately tough to go back to the official release.

But even for the most casual of Smash fans, Project M feels like the definitive way to play Brawl, some even maintaining to this very day that it's the best Smash experience full stop.

Yet Nintendo being Nintendo, of course they banned anyone from their Miiverse forum who mentioned the mod on the grounds of discussing "criminal content."
