When Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was released, fans couldn't stop complaining about franchise icon Solid Snake being switched out for a new protagonist, Raiden, who was near-universally deemed an inferior replacement.

His lesser combat experience and overall "green" demeanour didn't endear him to many fans, but that perception certainly changed when Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots came out.

By the time of the fourth game, Snake is suffering from extensively accelerated ageing due to being a clone of Big Boss, ensuring he's considerably weaker than he was the last time we saw him, even rocking the moniker "Old Snake."

Raiden, meanwhile, makes his illustrious return as a cyborg ninja, which while a result of the Patriots experimenting upon him against his will, makes him considerably faster, stronger, and more durable than either he or Snake ever were in their respective primes.

Though Snake is still a highly skilled infiltrator in Metal Gear Solid 4, his weathered nature makes him no match for a literally engineered killing machine like Raiden 2.0.
