2. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart
Singles Match (Wrestlemania 10, 1994)
What Happened? As one of the co-victors of the 1994 Royal Rumble, Bret Hart (along with Lex Luger), won the right to face WWF Champion Yokozuna at Wrestlemania 10. A coin was flipped to see who would get their title shot first, with the loser being forced to wrestle an additional match earlier on the card. Hart lost the toss. At the time, Bret was embroiled in a feud with his younger brother Owen, which stemmed back to the previous year's Survivor Series, where Owen had been eliminated after an accidental collision with his elder sibling. He constantly demanded a match with Bret over the next few weeks, but was refused every time. The two were booked to face The Quebecers as a tag team at the Royal Rumble, only for Bret to suffer a supposed injury, prompting Owen to attack him and set up a match at Wrestlemania. Bret was widely expected to win, given his high status within the company at the time, but in a major upset, Owen prevailed in a twenty minute display between the two. Bret would beat Yokozuna for the title in the show's main event after Luger's failure to do so, but his match with Owen is the one that has gone down in history as a classic.
Why Won't We See It? Because of Owen Hart's widow. At the Over the Edge pay-per-view event in May 1999, Owen Hart (whose gimmick at the time was that of the 'Blue Blazer', a clumsy superhero) was set to face The Godfather in a match for the Intercontinental Championship. Hart was due to make a dramatic entrance being lowered into the ring only to become tangled and fall flat on his face for comic effect. This necessitated the installation of a quick-release mechanism on his safety harness, which he is believed to have unintentionally triggered. This resulted in him falling 78 feet onto the top rope and into the ring, where he was attended to by medical personnel before being taken to hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. His death led to an obvious fracture between his widow Martha and the WWE that has seemingly yet to be completely repaired, given that she sued the company in 2010 for using her late husband's likeness in a DVD release and an agreement wasn't reached until April of this year. Such animosity will likely prevent the use of Owen's likeness for some time yet, even if his brother Bret has buried his own hatchet with the McMahon family.
