After The Hollywood Blondes disbanded Steve was sounded out for a singles run. In future promos he cut for ECW especially, he would constantly refer to the fact he was promised the world by Eric Bischoff and the WCW hierarchy only to be let down and eventually released over the phone. Initially, things started well for Austin as he won the WCW United States Championship from Dustin Rhodes in a two-out-of-three-falls match at Starrcade, before launching into another programme with Ricky Steamboat and subsequently 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan. Then, inexplicably, Austin was fired by WCW as they didn't see him as "marketable". There would be plentiful opportunities to let Steve have his say in a number of interview packages here while WWE could bask in the glory of Steve's success while working for them. Getting yet another one-upmanship on their old foes.
