Xbox Users Hacked Through Online Scam

It was announced today that thousands of Xbox Live users had money stolen from their bank accounts due to an online phishing attack, the average amount was £100 however some users have lost more than twice that amount. Xbox have yet to release any information involving how many users were targeted by the scam or how much money was taken, however The Sun claims thousands were hit in 35 countries. It also stated that the criminals were expected to have made, 'millions of pounds'. Apparently the criminals withdrew small amounts of money which made them difficult to discover until now. The Sun went on to say that Xbox staff are working to ensure no more victims fall victim to the scam and that Microsoft have also offered to reimburse users who can prove they did not give out their password information. It's also advised that if you have came across anything similar that you change your password. 'Phishing' is a direct term relating to fishing, in which someone drops bait and wait's for another to bite. The attack involved the criminal gang emailing users which directed them to fake sites offering them free Microsoft Points, all users were asked to do was to enter their credit card details. Users who had done so found that their credit cards were a little lighter. The gang are also rumored to have befriended users online to attract more attention. We can only warn readers to be wary of any websites that ask for your credit card details, especially those that are offering something free in return.
