You couldn’t escape Calamity Ganon in Breath of the Wild, but no mention was ever made of his humanoid form, Ganondorf. A former Gerudo king, this ancient evil was sealed away 10,000 years ago after the first Calamity, but finally broke free 100 years ago, instigating the second Calamity.

Despite the efforts of King Rhoam to stop him, his malice spread across Hyrule Castle, visible from miles away and was stopped only by Princess Zelda’s power, a move that left his resurrection incomplete.

After his second defeat at the hands of Link, Zelda confirms during the ending that his destruction is only temporary and this sets the scene for the reveal. Finding Link and Zelda explore underneath Hyrule Castle after this battle, they discovered Ganondorf's mummified corpse surrounded by malice, wearing a medallion and resting beneath a glowing hand.

The glowing hand soon grabs Link’s arm though, and Ganondorf’s corpse returns to life, his burning red eyes lighting up and followed by Hyrule Castle inexplicably floating into the sky. What implications this holds remains unknown for now other than that his resurrection is now upon us.

Considering how BOTW developed Link and Zelda as characters, this provides an opportunity for a more ambiguous, nuanced Ganondorf than we’ve previously seen and leaves a lot to look forward to.
