10 Best Performances From 2024 Horror Movies

7. Nell Tiger Free - The First Omen

Smile 2 Naomi Scott
20th Century Studios

Even though there was much pre-release hand-wringing about the "necessity" of a prequel to The Omen, there was never any doubt about lead actress Nell Tiger Free's ability to give a barnstorming central performance.

The Servant actress is perfectly cast here as American novice nun Margaret, who uncovers a disturbing conspiracy after being sent to work at a Catholic orphanage in Rome. Free nails Margaret's naivete and increasing terror as she becomes ensnared in the scheme to bring about the birth of the Antichrist. It's a tremendously physical role that requires Free to put herself through the wringer, culminating in one of the most unforgettably unnerving breakdown sequences in recent horror history.

Inspired though Free's turn obviously is by Isabelle Adjani's work in classic horror film Possession, it nevertheless stands tall as a towering acting accomplishment in its own right, and confirms beyond any doubt that she's one of the most talented Scream Queens working today.
