10 Biggest Missed Opportunities In Horror Movie History

8. Trick 'r Treat 2

Horror anthology film Trick 'r Treat was quietly dumped on home video in 2009 after a number of festival screenings, yet went on to become a word-of-mouth cult hit that spawned its own comic book series and made protagonist Sam into a genuine merchandising icon.

Director Michael Dougherty originally announced plans for a Trick 'r Treat sequel in late 2009, yet development stalled in the years that followed, even as the filmmaker continued to talk it up.

Near the end of 2023, Dougherty confirmed that a draft of the script was finished, though emphasised that budget and scheduling concerns needed to be addressed.

It's honestly baffling that, given the film's popularity and generally bulletproof nature of the horror genre financially-speaking, that a streamer hasn't thrown some money Dougherty's way to produce his sequel.

After all, the original Trick 'r Treat only cost $12 million, and even if a sequel required double that figure in 2025, it'd likely still be a sound investment given the first film's enduring popularity.

That it still hasn't happened is a crying shame.
