10 Horror Movie Characters Who Didn't Know They Were The Monster

There have already been, and will be more, on this list where a character's mind created some kind of fictitious falsehood in order to protect itself from the truth. This, of course, comes as a reaction to trauma, but as was the case with Outbreak's Neil, here there is also often a strong element of guilt.

The character in question in this instance is Anna (Emily Browning), portrayed in The Uninvited as a young girl who lost her mother and had suffered terribly in the months since. She had lost memory of what happened that night, something her therapist responded to by simply saying some things are best forgotten.

However, this went deeper than just trauma. Throughout the film, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), the new girlfriend of Anna's father, is painted as the evil stepmother, with suggestions that if there were foul play involved in Anna's mother's death, it would have been thanks to Rachel. She was certainly no angel, but in this at least she was innocent.

Anna and her sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) believed they had proved Rachel killed their mom, and that she was trying to do them harm, before Alex was forced to kill Rachel. It wasn't until this point that Anna's dad had to remind her that Alex was killed in the same fire as their mother, a fire that Anna herself started. Anna may have been trying to kill her dad and Rachel, but she inadvertently took the lives of the two innocents in the story - her mother and sister - and was thrown into a world of lies as a result.
