4. Brenda Is Obviously The Killer - Urban Legend

Slashers have set-in-stone rules that every moviegoer should be aware of. Anyone who has sex isn't going to make it to the end. The car doesn't start when it needs to. The killer is never dead when they seem to be.

But there's another lesser-known rule in the genre that's just as important; it's always suspicious when a kill occurs off-screen. If all of the kills in a slasher occur on-screen save for one, it's fairly likely that "victim" is the villain.

Urban Legend is a perfect example of this practice. While Natalie (Alicia Witt) is at college, she discovers there's a parka-wearing maniac on campus that's re-enacting urban legends to slaughter victims. When she discovers the corpse of her best friend, Brenda, Natalie is devastated beyond words.

However, only the aftermath of Brenda's death is shown, not the act itself. As such, it's obvious Brenda orchestrated her supposed murder, so she wouldn't be a suspect. Even though the janitor is set up to be the antagonist, it's obvious to observant viewers that he's a red herring, and Brenda is the true culprit.
