10 Horror Movie Twists We All Saw Coming
2. Teddy Daniels Is Andew Laeddis - Shutter Island
There's nothing wrong with a film leaving a few breadcrumbs around to help viewers work out the twist. In fact, viewers may not mind working everything out, since it proves they were paying attention.
But Shutter Island throws out so many clues, the final revelation was pretty expected. In Martin Scorsese's psychological thriller, federal investigators Edward "Teddy" Daniels and Chuck Aule head to an isolated asylum after learning murderous arsonist Andrew Laeddis has escaped.
In the end, Teddy realises he and Andrew are one and the same. The facilitator, Dr. Crawley, explains that Andrew created the Teddy persona since he was unable to deal with the fact he murdered his wife. Crawley devised this entire scenario with Chuck Aule - who's actually Andrew's personal doctor - hoping to bring Laeddis back to reality.
Even though Teddy doesn't believe Crawley at first, he really should, since the truth was right under his nose. Teddy is unable to light a match because he associates them with arson. The continuity is deliberately inconsistent to highlight Teddy's imbalanced mind. Chuck is unable to handle a firearm in the first scene, proving he's not a federal investigator. Teddy has no trouble finding Andrew's notebook in his room, despite the fact he's supposedly never been there.
And considering "Edward Daniels" is an anagram of "Andrew Laeddis," it genuinely feels like the filmmakers didn't want the twist to be hidden.
