Though things haven't been so bad in recent years, movies inspired by video games had a dire reputation for the longest time, mainly thanks to the work of director Uwe Boll, who has a habit of producing terrible adaptations of beloved titles.

Among Boll's many, many, many atrocities is 2005's Alone in the Dark, which drew inspiration from the series of the same name that began in the early 90s. While the original game was labelled as a trailblazer in almost every sense, the same could not be said for its film counterpart.

The movie is absolutely dire. The camerawork is abysmal, the dialogue is stilted and dry, and the action is so unexciting that you'll wonder how it was based on a game that used to legitimately terrify people back in the day.

Of all of Boll's crimes against human eyeballs, Alone in the Dark is up there with the very worst. Do yourself a favour and just play the games. You'll thank yourself.
