10 More Awful Horror Movies With Incredible Special Effects

1. The Invisibility - Hollow Man

It goes without saying that Hollow Man is Paul Verhoeven's worst film. Even though this Invisible Man-inspired feature has potential, it quickly descends into a by-the-numbers slasher, devoid of any creativity the RoboCop director is known for.

Having said that, it's challenging not to be blown away by the CGI. Multiple techniques were utilised to render Kevin Bacon's character, Sebastian Caine, invisible, including digital clones, thermal imaging, composites, and latex body suits.

The filmmakers never take the easy route, devising complex scenarios where Caine's outline is rendered visible with blood, water, smoke, or electricity.

The scene when Caine becomes invisible was so complex that a new software called volume-rendering was invented, which mapped out Bacon's body from the inside out. This tech devised a CGI render of Bacon's skin, muscles, organs, nervous system, skeleton, all the way down to his capillaries.

Even though CGI was far more advanced when The Invisible Man was released 20 years later, that adaptation didn't come close to pushing the visuals as much as Hollow Man.

The movie may not work as a whole, but it's a must-watch for anyone seeking a feast for the eyes.
