10 More Great Sci-Fi Horror Movies (No One Ever Talks About)
8. Colour Out Of Space
Despite HP Lovecraft's talents as a science-fiction guru, the film industry have immense difficulty adapting his work to other mediums.
Having said that, 2019's Colour Out of Space nails it, perfectly invoking the cosmic horror which the Cthulhu creator is renowned for.
When an interdimensional meteorite crashes near the house of Nathan Gardner (Nicholas Cage), he and his family try to understand where it came from. Later on, a sentient light called The Colour bursts from the otherworldly rock, altering everything in comes into contact with, physically and mentally.
For the longest time, Colour Out of Space focuses more on sci-fi factor tropes, which might test the patience of horror loyalists. But when the scares kick off, even purists of the genre will find themselves paralysed by fear (especially during the attic sequence).
Rather than relying on the dark to build tension, Colour Out of Space uses, as the title suggests, colour. Although pink is rarely associated with dread, the most unsettling scenes are bombarded with this vibrant hue, giving the movie a beautifully unique aesthetic.
As a bonus, there has rarely been a movie where Nic Cage has cut this loose (and that's saying A LOT).
