9. Alexia - Titane
Julia Ducournau followed up her 2016 indie hit Raw with Titane, a film that follows the psychotic Alexia (Agathe Rousselle) on a path of destruction, from killing a punter at a motor show to completely infiltrating the private life of lonely, grief-stricken fire chief Vincent (Vincent Lindon).
As Titane reveals, Alexia's refusal to toe the line and listen to authority - in the first instance, her father - results in a car crash that leaves her with a metal plate in her head. This event reverberates across the rest of her life, altering her appearance, cementing her disrespect of authority, and leading her down a path of mechaphilia and murder.
She is both protagonist and antagonist, like Patrick Bateman before her, but with somehow even less motive to go on. We understand her responses to in-the-moment threats like fending off sexual assault in an empty car park or going on the run after she's razed her family home, but nothing of what she does or says speaks of a larger plot or motive.
