10 More Worst Fates Suffered By Heroes In Horror Movies

Nobody deserved to go out like this...

Event Horizon

While watching a horror flick, it's important to know some characters are there to be cannon-fodder. If the story centres around a masked maniac, an interdimensional entity, or a prehistoric monster, it's best not to get too attached to the ensemble.

However, it's a different story when it comes to the hero. The good guy is layered in so much plot-armour, they should be able to shuffle off anything. They can be pummelled, stabbed, shot, and tortured, but that's not going to stop them kicking the villain's ass.

But as has been mentioned in our prior 10 Worst Fates Suffered By Heroes In Horror Movies list, things don't always fair well for our knight in shining armour. Despite the main character's best efforts, they can fail to prevent the apocalypse, protect their loved ones, or save their own skin.

Even if they survive, that's not necessarily a good thing, since they could be forced to live with their own failure forever. Other times, a protagonist must sacrifice themselves, forced to endure an excruciating death for the greater good.

Whether or not these heroes triumphed over evil, each of them suffered an unbearable fate.

10. Ash Williams - Army Of Darkness

Event Horizon
Universal Pictures

Following the events of Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness kicks off with Ash Williams being cast into medieval Europe, where he faces a new legion of Deadites. After that threat is vanquished, the chainsaw-armed warrior is transported back to his own time, wrapping up the franchise nicely.

At least, that's the canonical ending of the Evil Dead trilogy. However, Army of Darkness was meant to end on a real sour note.

In the original climax, The Wise Man gives Ash a potion that allows him to sleep 100 years for every drop he drinks. To wake up in his time period, Ash must consume six drops.

Since Ash is a massive idiot, he consumes seven drops by mistake. Awaking in the 2090s, Ash looks around at his surroundings, only to see all of human civilisation has collapsed. Curling up in a ball, Ash screams how he "slept too long" before the screen cuts to black.

After all the evil that Ash has faced and defeated, it's pretty embarrassing how the boomstick-blasting store clerk was finally undone by his greatest enemy; his own stupidity.
