10 Most Disappointing Villains From Recent Horror Movies
5. AMELIA - M3GAN 2.0
M3GAN was one of the surprise critical and commercial hits of 2022, with the Gerald Johnstone-helmed horror/sci-fi blending gross-out kills with laugh-out-loud moments. And so, naturally, Universal Pictures greenlit a sequel shortly afterwards.
However, whereas Aliens perfectly infuses Ridley Scott's 1979 horror with James Cameron's action-packed spectacle, 2025's M3GAN 2.0 is a disappointing downgrade.
The follow-up traipses the Terminator 2: Judgment Day template by having M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis) assisting her creator Gemma (Allison Williams) in stopping the rogue Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android, aka AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno).
Sakhno does embody the physicality of the AI android antagonist with deadeye aplomb, but without any wicked wisecracking quips accompanying her murderous moments, AMELIA has all the charm of an interview with AI actress Tilly Norwood. Perhaps it was concealed within the black hole of her core directive.
At one point, M3GAN remarks, "This might actually get interesting". It's just a shame it never really does, and that's because of the serious lack of humorous horror that made the first film so memorable. Whilst M3GAN gave us a feeling of suspense and anticipation - "You need to learn some manners, Brandon" - AMELIA dishes out more of a crash, bang, wallop brand of punishment - although props to her for sneaking up on tech titan turncoat Christian (Aristotle Athari), then coolly emerging with his severed arm moments later.
Even the final showdown between AMELIA and M3GAN fails to generate any electricity, despite them being spectacularly surrounded by the stuff.
