2009's Friday the 13th remake wasn't perfect by any means, but it did do something relatively unexpected, by avoiding just listlessly rehashing the 1980 movie and at least trying to be different by incorporating elements from the first four films.

The opening 20 minutes of the movie depict a group of ill-fated youngsters making a camping trip to Crystal Lake, where four of the five "main" characters are swiftly offed by Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears). And just as Jason takes a swing at the only remaining one, Whitney (Amanda Righetti), the scene suddenly cuts to black.

The story then moves forward six weeks, where the rest of the movie focuses on a whole new bunch of characters, including Whitney's brother Clay (Jared Padalecki), who heads to Crystal Lake in search of her.

Given that this remake could've just been a dead-simple re-do of the original movie, remixing the formula with the help of a time jump was a most pleasant surprise indeed.
