5. Chum

Still to this day, over 50 years later, Jaws is one of the greatest - if not the greatest - horror movies of all time, and since 1975, you could count the genuinely good shark films on one hand. Chum is not one of these films.

Of course, it wouldn't be fair to compare Chum with Jaws, as they are two ends of a very wide spectrum, but you can see what makes a good shark flick, and then that the former doesn't even attempt anything like it.

For such a movie to be a success, of course, much hinges on the shark itself. In Jaws, Spielberg kept the beast largely off screen, utilising the fear of it more so than anything else. In Chum, no such strategy is used, as the leviathan is front and center, and for lack of a better word, it looks awful.

This is largely because it was brought to life with the use of AI, and never has there been a better argument for why this should not be done. There was no way to take it as seriously as the film seemed to expect, and paired with basic things like a poor script, a laughable plot, and characters that audiences were always going to struggle to connect with, this was always doomed to fail.
