20 Great Horror Roles Ruined By Terrible Acting

9. The Saw Franchise - Mark Hoffman

Killing off Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) and his apprentice Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) at the end of Saw III was a mistake that has haunted the Saw films ever since. With the loss of the two best characters, the sequels needed a new apprentice to carry the torch, and sadly, the replacement did not live up to his predecessors at all.

Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) was not a good villain in the end, and while he wasn't as interesting as the other two in general, he might've landed better with a stronger performance. Unfortunately, Mandylor never had much presence on-screen and never came off as especially scary or evil. If anything, he just seemed vaguely grumpy a lot of the time, and his supporting actors often had to do most of the heavy lifting in a scene. Most notably, there's a mostly great flashback showing the first meeting between Jigsaw and Hoffman, and Tobin Bell absolutely carries that scene.

Hoffman made a post-credits cameo in the recent Saw X, and while there was an inevitable rush of nostalgia when he reappeared, he still didn't quite have it, and Mandylor's native Australian accent was slipping in a bit, too. Hopefully, this character can be kept off-screen in any future sequels, but that seems unlikely.
