It was back in 2016 that director Nicolas Winding Refn announced that he was planning to remake William Lustig's cult classic 1988 slasher film Maniac Cop.

The project certainly seemed like a fine fit for Refn's sensibilities, but nothing fruitful came of the announcement, all while Refn kept himself busy with his limited TV series Too Old to Die Young and Copenhagen Cowboy, as well as his new film Her Private Hell. But back in March, original director William Lustig made the surprise announcement that the Refn-directed Maniac Cop remake is indeed happening, with Mubi set to distribute.

Production is currently set to start in early 2027 in Los Angeles, and though we don't know anything yet about the wider cast and crew, a neon-splashed, brutally violent Maniac Cop movie from Refn has so much potential.

That is to say, this could very well be one of the decade's finest, most gorgeous exploitation films.
